Pinoys on Parliament - $1,000
Who
Lhori Webster and nine other students at UOttawa (all under 25)
What
Pinoys on Parliament was founded in 2019 and is the first national event to bring together young Filipino-Canadians together to discuss what is important and interests them with a focus on representation in politics and government and other fields where the FIlipino community is presently underrepresented. They will host a conference in February 2020 providing Fil-Can youth the space to network with fellow youth as well as esteemed Filipino leaders in various fields.
In their words: “Pinoys on Parliament believes in the mantra “Lift While You Climb” and is committed to bringing together as many young Filipino-Canadians as possible to discuss the issues and interests of this demographic in a way that has not been done before. Organized by Filipino-Canadian youth, for Filipino-Canadian youth, Pinoys on Parliament was first inspired by the sheer lack of representation for the Filipino community in Canadian politics and government and a large variety of fields in addition to this. Despite being the fastest growing immigrant community in Canada, third largest overall, and having the official language Tagalog as the fastest growing language in Canada, Filipinos are still grossly under-represented in federal politics and government and in many mainstream fields and professions. In fact, there has only ever been one Member of Parliament in Canadian history who is of Filipino descent.”
