What
Camps for children coordinates free recreational program for low-income kids in Ottawa. In January 2020, Camp for children will work with Camp fortune to invite 20 low-income youth, who have never skied before, free ski lessons. Each participant will be given transportation with a yellow school bus, free skies and helmet rentals, lunch and snacks, 1hr 30min ski lessons by certified ski instructors and a 2 hour ski session led by volunteer ski instructors.
In their words: “Our free ski program is an effort to make skiing an accessible activity to all youth. A large body of research has shown how our socio-economic status is linked with our health and wellbeing. Youth and children are among the most vulnerable in Low-income families. There is a higher risk and prevalence for mental health problems, chronic disease such as Diabetes and Heart Disease; higher dropout rates. One of the ways to minimize these risk factors for vulnerable youth from low-income families is participation in structured recreational programs.”
