What
There will be one video per day throughout Black History Month to address the lack of Black Canadian history taught in schools. The individual featured in the video will be able to take up the space to talk about themselves, any project that they’re working on and their experience as a Black human in Canada. In addition to this, the individual will have to mention something about Black Canadian history that they either didn’t know, find interesting or inspiring. We think that this is a great way to empower Black youth, bring us together and garner more excitement about our history and about local projects!
In their words: “Meaningful lessons on Black Canadian history are missing from the curriculum in elementary and secondary schools. Lessons are majorly vested in African American history in the United States and sometimes highlight significant advances made by notable Canadians such as Viola Desmond. However, in Canada, when such a heavy focus is made on the United States, it ultimately serves to erase Blackness from Canadian history. Our history gets lost in all the already inaccurate accounts of Canadian history, and as a result we are missing out on this knowledge.”
