What

Sidra’s treehouse is a mentorship program for refugee children. The goal of this initiative is to integrate refugee children into Canadian society in a respectful way that maintains their self worth and values. This youth group facilitates weekly academic and social activities for these children like Math and English tutoring, group games and group discussions. Sidra’s treehouse is a very successful initiative, as currently up to 50 kids and counting are involved in the program.

In their words: “We first launched in December 2016, with the intent of creating a safe-space for refugee children to prosper and grow in response to the gaping need found in the Ottawa community. The goal of the program is to build a strong big-brother, big-sister relationship, in hopes that the children will develop a sense of trust and security in their mentor. We hope that the relationships cultivated through this program will provide the children with a secure base in this new phase of life, a crucial aspect for a smooth transition into a new culture.
