What
Odawa’s two-spirit, trans and gender diverse march on August 17 at the Human Rights Monument, where there will be a mourning vigil for Black, Indigenous and Trans Women of Colour. People will be placing heels at the monument to not only represent the first heel Marsha P. Johnson threw at Stonewall, but also the many BIPOC trans folks who have been violently killed and each of the heels will bear one of their names. The march will then move to the Hill where they will announce their federal call to action and related demands. Then the march will head towards Jack Purcell where the community will be greeted with a potluck and small market.
In their words: “With the support from Youth Action Now, the Trans march can create and foster positive and meaningful community for marginalized two-spirit trans, and gender diverse folks in Ottawa. Many of the events held during Ottawa’s Pride season can be both financially and socially inaccessible for LGBTQIA folks who are typically pushed to the margins. With this funding we hope to make the march and post-march gathering as accessible as possible for everyone who attends so that the folks who normally do not have access to spaces like these can be included. We also intend on paying our speakers and artists fairly for their work, especially since many local trans artists, especially BIPOC, are often not presented with opportunities to be paid well for their work.”
